Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher was my 4th & 5th grade teacher because she took the time to get to know me.  She was (and continues to be) an inspiration.  I keep in touch with her to this day.
I think all of my students should read…
Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, A Simple Habana Melody by Oscar Hijuelos, Rain of Gold by Victor Villaseñor, and anything by Federico García Lorca.
What advice or words of wisdom would you offer to students?
Go away to university…leave home, learn, grow, expand, meet people unlike you, share your stories…then come back home and give back to your community.  Learn to edify yourself and others.
    Who is/are your hero(es)?
My parents, Judy Shephard, Harvey Milk, José Martí, Federico García Lorca.
